Paying extra money for waiting time

Friday, 9 May 2014

Introduction of new taxicabs by the communication ministry is obviously a praiseworthy step. The new taxicabs are designed with modern services, including GPRS. The Bangladesh Army is handling the whole project. Although the taxicabs will ease the communication for common people, there is a problem. Extra fair is being criticised by different quarters. On request of the prime minister, the fair has been reduced by Tk 15 and fixed at Tk 85 for the first two kilometers.
But there is another point to consider. A passenger will have to pay Tk eight for two minutes' waiting time in gridlock. We know that Dhaka city dwellers have to face huge traffic jam almost everyday. Sometimes passengers have to wait more than an hour due to gridlock. On the other hand, there are too many signals on the city streets and passengers have to wait even 10 to 20 minuets to cross some signals. In this case, the taxi fare will cost an extra amount and the passengers may even have to pay more extra money for waiting time the fare for a certain distance. Thus, an extra burden has been imposed on the passengers. The authority concerned must pay attention to bring the traffic jam to zero level and of course to the amount to be paid for waiting time.
