The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has filed a charge sheet against two for spreading misinformation about the kachchi served at Sultan's Dine, according to a local media report.
The charge sheet was filed on September 19 in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka. The two people named in the charge sheet are Kanak Laila and Abdul Hakim.
On April 3, 2023, Kamrul Ahmed, manager of Sultan's Dine's Gulshan branch, filed a complaint in the CMM Court alleging that Kanak Laila and Abdul Hakim had spread misinformation about his restaurant's kachchi. The court later ordered the PBI to investigate the allegations.
Investigation Officer Mohammad Nazim Uddin, a sub-inspector at PBI, was quoted as saying on Monday, "We have been confirmed after investigation that there was only mutton in Sultan's Dine's kachchi.
"However, Kanak Laila and Abdul Hakim spread misinformation that there was dog or cat meat in Sultan's Dine's kachchi, which is a punishable offence. They have been charged with defamation and extortion."
Several attempts to reach Kanak Laila and Abdul Hakim by phone on Monday were unsuccessful as their phones were found switched off.
Kamrul Ahmed, manager of Sultan's Dine's Gulshan branch in Dhaka, was quoted as saying, "We have been doing business with reputation for a long time with nine branches in Dhaka and two in Chattogram.
"However, Kanak Laila and Abdul Hakim spread false information about our kachchi. This has caused irreparable damage to our business."
The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) had also investigated the allegation against the restaurant in March but they did not find any evidence to support it.
