RANGAMATI, May 17: A union level leader of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) was gunned down and another was wounded seriously Sunday night allegedly by the armed cadres of anti-peace accord United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) at Rajasthali Upazila headquarters of the district.
The victim is Uchinu Marma, 28, son of Thuihla Prue of village Krangsai Para at Rajasthali Upazila headquarters. He was an organising secretary of PCJSS, Gaiyandya union unit of the upazila.
The wounded is Ubaching Marma, 28, of village Jagonachhari in Rikhali union under Kaptai Upazila of the district. He was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital yesterday as his condition was deteriorating.
A group of UPDF men equipped with heavy arms came to Rajasthali Upazila sadar at about 11:00pm and sprayed bullets on the leaders and activists of PCJSS, while they were preparing to sleep at the newly opened office of UPDF, leaving Uchinu dead on the spot and the other wounded critically, Rajasthali police said.
Recently, members of UPDF opened a new party office at Rajasthali Upazila sadar. But the PCJSS men grabbed this office some twelve days back, and they changed the name to Rajasthali Krira and Sangskritik Club. Since then PCJSS members are using it as their party office.
At least 15 to 20 PCJSS men were staying at the club when the UPDF armed men attacked them, PCJSS sources said.
Michel Chakma, Rangamati district unit leader of UPDF today denied the allegation and said that it might have occurred due to internal conflict of PCJSS. He, however, said their office had been grabbed by the PCJSS men.
Md. Rezaul, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajasthali police confirmed the incident and said they were trying to arrest of the killers.
Protesting the incident PCJSS today brought out a procession in the town and held a protest rally at the premises of Rangamati Deputy Commissioner's office.
Presided by Gunendu Bikash Chakma, president of PCJSS district unit, the rally was also addressed, among others, by Laxmi Prasad Chakma, vice-president of PCJSS central committee, its information secretary Mongal Kumar Chakma, Sajib Chakma and Nogendra Chakma.
Blaming the government, PCJSS leaders said the government did not ban the UPDF as it was what they said a terrorist organisation despite their demand several times earlier.
They said main barrier to full implementation of CHT peace accord was UPDF. If UPDF was banned, then the execution of the treaty would be easy. Armed men of UPDF were killing our leaders and activists one by one, and creating setback in the process of proper execution of the peace deal, they said.
They condemned the incident and demanded immediate ban on the UPDF. They also demanded arrest of the culprits and exemplary punishment to them.
Earlier, a big procession was brought out by PCJSS men from its district office which paraded the main thoroughfare in the hill town of Rangamati today.
