Peaceful hartal in Fulgazi

Thursday, 22 May 2014

The daylong hartal, enforced by Fulgazi upazila unit of Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies protesting the killing of local AL leader Ekramul Haque, was progressing peacefully in Fulgazi upazila on Thursday. A group of followers of slain Ekramul Haque, also the upazila chairman, blocked the roads placing logs and torching tyres in different areas of the upazila in the morning. The local unit AL and its associate bodies — Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League — brought out separate processions in different areas of the upazila in the morning. No vehicles left the upazila headquarters. Even plying of rickshaw was less than normal on the roads. Owners of the roadside shops kept their shutters down during the strike. Fulgazi upazila AL general secretary Abdul Alim announced the shutdown after a meeting with the party leaders on Wednesday evening. Upazila chairman Ekramul Haque was shot and burnt to death by miscreants in Academy area of Feni town on Tuesday, according to UNB.
