Peaceful hartal underway in Sylhet

Monday, 17 November 2014

A daylong hartal, enforced by local social organisation Amra Sylhetbasi to protest the inclusion of Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury’s name in the supplementary charge-sheet in Shah AMS Kibria murder case, is going on peacefully in the city on Monday. Amra Sylhetbasi president Abdur Razzak announced the 6:00am to 6:00pm shutdown programme at a mass rally held at Court Point on Saturday afternoon. Most of the motorised vehicles remained off the roads and business establishments remained closed. No long-route buses left the north-eastern divisional headquarters. A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the district to fend off any trouble, according to a news agency.
