Peasants optimistic about garlic production in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Jan 1: Garlic plants at different areas under the district are growing well, signalling an excellent yield of the crop this year.
Sources said the peasants of the region have been earning handsome profit through the cultivation of the spicy crop in recent years which is encouraging them to enhance its farming during this season.
According DAE sources the atmosphere, moderate rainfall and soil of the region are also congenial to the farming of different varieties of spicy crops including garlic, turmeric, ginger, chilli, onion etc.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources about 1,250 hectares of lands have been brought under garlic cultivation in 8 upazilas of the district during the current season and the farmers are optimistic of a bumper yield of their produce if the weather conducive.
Rashed Mia, a garlic grower of village Char Morneya in Kawnia upazila told The Financial Express that cultivation of spicy crops is more lucrative than cultivation of paddy, wheat and other crops.
He has cultivated garlic on 25 decimals of land this year and is hopeful about achieving a good harvest and profit owing to its increasing market price.
Sahrul, a garlic grower of Chawdhurypara village of Alampur union in Taraganj upazila said he prefers spicy crop farming than farming of other crops due to huge profit. He cultivated garlic on 40 decimals of land this season.
During last few years he has been getting a good yield as well as expected profit from farming of the crop, he also said.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said the department has taken adequate measures to increase the farming and production of garlic and some other spicy crops in the region in order to reduce dependency on import.
DAE has been providing the cultivators with quality seeds, necessary inputs and helping the farmers for the utilisation of modern technologies, sources added.
