People interested in social business won't seek govt support: Prof Yunus

Saturday, 6 November 2010

WOLFSBURG, Germany, Nov 5 (UNB): Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus said here Friday that the people, who are interested in social business, will never seek government support and facilities like tax cut.
The government will not be involved in the social business, he said.
The managing director of Grameen Bank and the initiator of the Social Business made the remarks while addressing a press conference in front of a good number of reporters who came from across the European countries.
The press conference was held at Lounge-2 of Autostadt (communication and service platform for the international Volkswagen Group) here and organised to inform about the Global Social Business Summit that started Thursday (Nov 4).
Hans Reitz (Grameen Creative Lab), Otto F Wachs (MD of Autostadt), Grand Duchess of Luxemburg Maria Teresa, noted writer Paulo Coelho, noted filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, Dr Andreas Knaut, Mayor of Wiesbaden (Germany), Dr Helmut Muller and Dr Maria Teresa Quiros Fernandez (EBS University) also spoke at the press conference.
Prof Yunus said: "Social Business will never seek special benefits from the government. I fear that if the government provides special facilities to the social business like tax cut then many people will gather to take those advantages in the name of social business."
He also said that the people who will be involved in the social business would make them competitive for the existing market and do their business facing all realities in the market.
Regarding his comment for not involving the government of a country in social business, the Nobel Laureate said that if the government comes to do the social business then it would use its power for taking advantages for the social business and that should not be done.
"That's why I am telling that the government of a country must not involve in the social business."
Replying to a question about the response to his concept of 'social business', he said that the kind of response he is getting in the last couple of years were very much encouraging. "I am convinced that in the very near future we will be able to address all social problems by the social business as this business is very much a workable methodology."
Prof Yunus said that he had put all his faith on the young people around the world for advancing his new concept. "It's the young people who will drive the social business."
In this connection, he mentioned that they (young people) have more power, they are more connected and their mind is flexible to accept new concepts. "They (young people) are ready to take new ideas," he said.
Responding to another question, he said the top executives of the top business organisations have the power to invest more in the social business and urged them to come in the social business with a view to resolving social problems across the world.
"Top executives have money to do business; they would use their power for solving problems by doing social business."
Later, Prof Yunus and noted writer Paulo Coelho attended a public lecture on 'Social Business' at Autostadt and answered questions from an over thousand audience, who are encouraged to do social business.
In the lecture, Prof Yunus urged the young people to come with new ideas for the social business.
"The first phase of the social business has been started. It's time for the young to come with new creative ideas and put forward the concept with great confidence," he said.
