People, not a person, were behind July Uprising: Shafiqur

Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday said it was not a single person but the country's 180 million people who were the masterminds behind the July 2024 mass uprising, reports UNB.
"We do not accept that there was a single mastermind behind this movement. We want to give credit to our young generation. The real masterminds are the 18 crore (180 million) people of Bangladesh," he said while speaking on a point of order in parliament.
The opposition leader said those who led the uprising to success deserve the highest respect.
"I think we all, from the core of our hearts, respect and love those under whose leadership the uprising succeeded," he said, adding that their dignity and rightful place must be preserved.
Shafiqur Rahman said he was the first to protest a remark made by former interim government Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus during his visit to the United States, in which he introduced former adviser Mahfuj Alam as the mastermind behind the July movement.
"Even when Dr Yunus, during his visit to the United States, referred to one person as the mastermind, I was the first to protest and say that we do not accept the idea of a single mastermind behind this movement," he said.
