RANGPUR, Feb 28: The people of shoal areas in Rangpur, Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts have been living an almost miserable life, deprived of proper nutrition, medicare and education facilities. Hence they suffer from malnutrition and illiteracy. The erosion of rivers has been gradually turning them landless every year by devouring their houses and cultivable lands. According to a statistics more than 80 per cent people living in the shoal areas suffer from a number of diseases due to lack of adequate health services. The reasons of their malnutrition are deficiency of a balanced diet and scarcity of pure drinking water. Compounding problems are ignorance, 'monga' (seasonal job crisis) erosion, poverty etc. These people are deprived of government as well as non-government aids.
