People rejected Jamaat\\\'s strike: AL

Sunday, 21 September 2014

The twin-hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami in protest against Delawar Hossain Sayedee's life-in-prison sentence is tantamount to contempt of court, Awami League leader Hasan Mahmud has said. He claimed the people have ‘rejected’ Jamaat-Shibir’s general strike on Thursday and also today (Sunday). ‘Vehicles are out on Dhaka’s streets and there are traffic snarls,’ Mahmud observed. The Appellate Division on Wednesday reduced Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Aameer Sayedee’s death sentence to ‘imprisonment until death’ for his war crimes in 1971. Jamaat’s acting Ameer Moqbul Ahmed on Wednesday afternoon called the nationwide 2-phase 48-hour shutdown for Thursday and Sunday opposing the SC verdict and demanding immediate release of Sayedee. However, the Awami League MP while addressing a rally in the city, claimed that people had ‘accepted’ the SC judgment on Sayedee ‘out of respect for the court’, according to bdnews24.com.
