Performance of FM radio in Bangladesh

Wednesday, 5 February 2014

FM (frequency modulation) radios are popular with the young generation, especially music lovers, in our country. FM radio has been launched in recent years. The number of FM radio stations has been increasing and there are seven stations running here. However, FM radios are still unable to live up to the mass people's expectations except perhaps to those of a few urban juvenile.
I have been observing their programmes for a long time but I find no variation. Some radio channels play a few popular rock, Hindi and English songs time and again that hardly reflect our culture. The Bangla utterances of the radio jockeys in English accent disappoint me. Their pronunciations and speaking styles are really shocking and disgusting and blended Bangla and English is difficult to understand. Songs of Tagore, Nuzrul, Lalon etc. are totally absent from their programmes. They are offering cheap recreation to the urban people and fail to entertain the rural people. There is nothing creative and educational in their programmes. They organise programmes following the special days, for example Valentine's Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day, Friendship Day etc. However, some national days, for example Victory Day, Independence Day and Language Day get less attention from them.
I hope that FM radio will play a significant role to promote our culture and grow awareness among people. They will reach the mass people. FM radios need to improve their programmes in order to make people politically conscious and educated.
