Peril of price-hike spreads in port city

CHITTAGONG, Sept 1: Peril of price-hike has spread in the port city due to the abnormal rise in prices of rice and other essential commodities.
Under the situation, the consumers, specially the people of lower income group, have been the worst sufferers, sources said.
Prices of both the fine and coarse varieties of rice have registered a rise up to Tk 3.0 per kg in the city kitchen markets, the sources added.
While talking to the local traders, it was gathered that within a gap of a week, price of the ordinary quality of rice had increased to a great extent.
Even the inferior quality of rice is now being sold at between Tk 22 and Tk 23 per kg.
With a view to curbing the galloping rice price, the government has decided to buy 48,000 tonnes of rice from the importers.
Meantime, within a gap of one week prices of lentil and gram have started rising following the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan. Price of onion is also following the similar trend.
Prices of other essential commodities like egg, milk, meat, fish and spices have not reduced yet. According to the sources, prices of these items are unlikely to decline shortly as the Ramadan is round the corner.
However, the price of sugar is static among the essential food items. Presently, sugar is being sold at Tk 28 per kg in the city retail markets.
Meantime, price of broiler has increased over Tk 15 per kg. Broilers, which were selling at Tk 80 per kg last week, is now selling at Tk 95 per kg, the sources added.
