Petition on state religion rejected

The High Court (HC) on Monday rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of Islam as state religion of Bangladesh. A layer filed the petition last month challenging the inclusion of Islam as the state religion in the Constitution. The HC turned down the petition on Monday morning. An HC bench, led by Justice Md Emdadul and Muhammad Khurshed Alam, passed the order after a hearing on the petition.
On August 1, Supreme Court lawyer Somendra Nath Goswami filed the writ challenging the validity of the insertion of Islam as the state religion by the 8th amendment and placed in Chapter 2(A) by the 15th amendment of the Constitution.
The court on August 30 heard the matter and set September 7 for the verdict. Somendra Nath Goswami stood as the petitioner and deputy attorney general Murad Reza argued for the state, report agencies.
