State-owned Petrobangla has taken moves to augment gas supply to energy-hungry Chittagong region through producing new gas and laying new pipelines, officials said Friday.
"We've taken some short-term and mid-term measures to augment gas supply to Chittagong," Petrobangla chairman Jalal Ahmed told the FE Friday.
Under the short-term measures, some 30 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) will be supplied to the Chittagong region by February next year, he said.
"We've already started developing Semutang gas field. Now, we are going to take another project for installing a pipeline for supplying gas from the field to Chittagong," Mr. Ahmed said.
State-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) will develop well at Semutang field in Khagrachari district and drill another well to supply 20 mmcfd to the national grid by June 2010.
Bakhrabad Gas Systems Limited (BGSL) will lay a 65-kilometre long 10-inch-diameter gas pipeline from the Semutang field to Chittagong by mid-2010 to supply gas to the port city.
"We've started filed development work at Semutang. It will produce 20 mmcfd of gas, which will be supplied to the Chittagong region," said M Imaduddin, managing director of BAPEX said.
The country's south-eastern port city Chittagong has been facing sever gas supply crisis over the last few months affecting industrial growth.
Several new industries are waiting for gas supply to start their production.
Gas distribution company BGSL is supplying only 260-270mmcfd of gas against the demand for over 360mmcfd in energy-hungry Chittagong region.
Gas supply system has almost broken down after the country's lone offshore field Sangu's production slipped drastically to 37.3mmcfd of gas from its original capacity of 150mmcfd two years ago.
Petrobangla chairman said that under the short-term measures over 30mmcfd of gas would be supplied by April next year and some 60mmcfd by the middle of 2010.
"We've already started supplying 10mmcfd of gas from the 30mmcfd capacity Bangura gas field. Another 20mmcfd gas will be injected into the pipeline from two wells at Bakhrabad gas filed through augmenting their production capacity," Jalal Ahmed said.
