PGCB to install 400kv transmission line

Country's power transmission system is going to get a big boost as the government will install a 70-kilometre 400-kilovolt high-voltage Ashuganj-Bhulta line for ensuring quality electricity supply to Dhaka city, officials said Saturday.
Power Division officials said the state-owned Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) would install the country's fourth high-voltage (400kv) power transmission line from Ashuganj to Bhulta in Narayanganj.
"We have planned to install 70km-long high voltage transmission grid from Ashuganj to Bhulta. We have already sought approval of a Tk 8.53 billion project for installing the line," said a senior Power Division official.
Bangladesh's all transmission grids are 230kv or below capacity ones for supplying electricity across the country.
Transmission lines of PGCB up to July last have stood at 3066 circuit km of 230kv lines, 6125 circuit km of 132kv lines, one 400kv substation, 18 230/132 kv substations and 88 132/33 kv substations.
The PGCB for the first time installed a 400 kv high voltage line from Bheramara in Bangladesh to Baharampur in Indian border for importing electricity from India. The grid is now transmitting power.
The state-owned power transmission company has recently completed installation of a 53km-long 400kv line from Meghnaghat to Aminbazar aimed at supplying uninterrupted power to the capital city.
Another 170km high-voltage 400kv line from Bibiyana to Kaliakor is under installation by the PGCB.
"The Ashuganj-Bhulta 400kv transmission line will be the fourth high-voltage line in Bangladesh. It will upgrade the country's power supply system a lot as it will evacuate power from the country's largest Ashuganj power station," said a senior PGCB official.
He said after completion of the Ashuganj-Bhulta transmission line, the capital city is expected to receive a better electricity supply from the generation plants.
A senior Power Division official said the government has decided to install the high-voltage power transmission line across the country and upgrade the existing lines gradually as the demands for electricity is increasing day-by-day.
He said the existing low capacity transmission line creates obstacles to supply high-voltage power to the distribution companies.
When there will be high voltage transmission line, the resistance on the electricity at the grid will be lower and will ensure adequate current resulting in quality supply of power at the consumers level, said an engineer at the Bangladesh Power Development Board.
He said the government's decision of upgrading the country's transmission system to high-voltage one is laudable.
