INDIANAPOLIS, Aug 3 (AFP): Swimming superstar Michael Phelps seized the 100-metre butterfly title at the US championships here Thursday as world record-holder Ian Crocker was disqualified.
Phelps touched first in the anticipated showdown with Crocker, who led for much of the race and would have claimed silver if not for a false start.
Phelps won in a meet record time of 51.39 seconds and was delighted with his strong finish.
“That was my fastest second 50 I have ever had," Phelps said.
“We know that is there, now we just have to work on the front half. Hopefully we can put it all together next year.”
