Philippines requested to import ceramic items from Bangladesh

Wednesday, 12 May 2010

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has requested the Philippines to import ceramic items and other items of world-class quality from Bangladesh, reports UNB.
She made the appeal when the outgoing ambassador of the Philippines, Zenaida Tocorda-Rabago, called on her at the PM's Office Tuesday.
The outgoing ambassador expressed her gratitude to the PM and her government for the all-out cooperation extended to her during her tenure in Bangladesh.
Press Secretary to the PM Abul Kalam Azad, who was present at the meeting, briefed reporters after the meeting. The PM and the ambassador also discussed various other issues of bilateral importance, common international issues, and enhancement of business and trade between the two countries.
The PM congratulated the outgoing ambassador for completing her tenure successfully.
She also expressed her satisfaction with five Bangladesh-Philippines joint ventures worth US$ 32.48 million in agro-based and service sectors, which have been registered with the Board of Investment.
She requested the ambassador to encourage more investment in Bangladesh from her country, and underscored the need for regular, periodic meetings between the Joint Economic Commission.
Hasina was also keen to stress the importance of reducing the trade imbalance. In FY 2008-09, Bangladeshi exports to the Philippines amounted to a meagre $ 11.77 million while imports were almost three times higher at $ 31.56 million.
She requested the support of the Philippines as Bangladesh has expressed its eagerness to become a dialogue partner of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
