Physically challenged woman raped

Sunday, 7 June 2015

A physically challenged woman has been raped in Kamarkhand upazila of Siranjganj district by a gang of men who, according to police, posed as transgender. Locals demonstrated at Jamtail Station protesting the delay in registering the case and failing to arrest the culprits on Saturday. Sadar upazila UNO Ishrat Farzana went to the spot and managed to persuade the protestors to calm down. The victim, a poor physically challenged female worker, has filed a case accusing four individuals. She lived in a shack with her elderly husband at Jamtail Station. The accused are ‘Sultan’ of Sadar upazila’s Porabari village and ‘Jonaki’ alias ‘Salma’, ‘Quamrul’ and ‘Nadia’ of Kodda crossing. None has been arrested so far. Sirajganj GRP Police Station OC Kamal Hossain said ‘the culprits might not be transgender’ though they had dressed so. According to the case details, the rapists lured the victim to Sultan’s house in Porabari village promising her to give sarees. They left her alone there after rape, she said. Kamarkhand Police Station’s SI Asaduzzaman Ripon, also investigation officer of the case, said the victim was sent to Sirajganj Civil Surgeon’s office for medical examination on Saturday afternoon. He said they were trying to nab the criminals, according to a news agency.
