RANGPUR, Feb 9: Frequent pilferage of electric goods like transformers, wire, spare parts has seriously been hampering smooth operation of Palli Biddut Samity in the district for long, sources said.
The pilferage caused untold sufferings to hundreds of electricity consumers in Mithapukur, Badarganj, Taraganj and some other upazilas of the district.
Sources further said although thousands of hectares of croplands in the aforesaid upazilas need immediate irrigation, due to frequent power outage because of pilferage in electrical goods owned by the Palli Biddut Samity, irrigation on crop fields has seriously been hampered, the sources added.
Abul Kashem (45), a farmer of Badarganj upazila under the district, told this correspondent that he had to suffer a huge financial loss because of frequent power outages which caused a serious hindrance to irrigation of his crop fields in time.
In the circumstances, the aim of making rural people benefited and boosting food production by setting up more Palli Biddut Samities has now become a day-dream, a consumer lamented.
Besides, husking machines, saw mills, printing presses, irrigation pumps and other industrial units that run on power also go out of operation because of such pilferage.
In the situation, people of the district have urged the government to take immediate action in this connection.
