Pilot programme for labour laws in shrimp industry

KHULNA, Mar 04: A pilot programme to ensure implementation of labour laws in shrimp industry has begun in six such processing units in Khulna.
Sources said that the project is being implemented under the auspices of Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) and financed by USAID.
Under the pilot programme ten shrimp processing units have been included. Of them, six in Khulna two each in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar.
In the programme industry owners, workers, contractors, staff, and employees would be trained on labour laws under a six-month-long pilot programme.
On the basis of success of the pilot programme selected firms will be made models of the shrimp industry.
About 70 per cent permanent workers have no appointment letters, it was learnt from a research report of a NGO Social Activities for Environment (SAFE). It may be maintained that at present there are 18 shrimp processing units in Khulna.
