Thursday, 5 March 2009

MANIKGANJ, Mar 4 (UNB): The Election Commission (EC) Wednesday began the work on implementing a pilot project for updating the voter list with photographs in four areas of the district.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda formally inaugurated the voter list-registration programme at noon on the Baliati union council premises.

The pilot project, for the first time without the assistance of the Bangladesh Army, will cover four areas of the district-Baliati and Fukurhati unions in Saturia Upazila and wards no-1 and 2 under Manikganj municipality.

Addressing the inaugural function, CEC Shamsul Huda said previously it was the custom to prepare voter list every five years before the election. As a result, there were many errors.

"From now on, the process of updating the updated voter list will be launched across the country every year from January 1. Upgraded machine and technology will be used to prepare correct voter list removing the errors," he said.

He urged the aspirant new voters to enroll their names from a single place where they usually live. "None can be a voter from more than one place."

The CEC said that while further updating the voter list, the EC would include young voters who attained 18 years from the first of January 2009 in addition to those who were left out in the previous updated voter list.

Besides, the EC will also exclude the names of the voters from the list who died after completion of the previous voter list.

Huda said the voter-list would be gradually updated every year to enable the Commission to hold parliamentary elections with updated voter-list on three months' notice.

He asked the people involved with the updating of voter-list along with the law-enforcing agencies to discharge their duties with sincerity to prepare a hundred per cent correct list.

The CEC said that using the experience of the pilot project, the task of voter-list updating would be completed in a month across the country.
