Pinak-6 search ends without any results

Monday, 11 August 2014

The search operation for missing launch 'Pinak-6' has been postponed. Saiful Hasan Badal, Deputy Commissioner of Munshiganj district, made the announcement at Padma Guest House at Mawa at Lauhajang Upazila in Munshiganj district on Monday. He said the search for the sunken passenger vessel has been shut down considering 'practical reality, the river condition and inclement weather'. The Munshiganj DC called the press conference to announce 'government decisions' a day after the search operation for the sunken vessel at Mawa was scaled down. He said though the rescue operation was called off officially, the authorities decided to keep a salvage ship - either Nirvik or Rustom - on standby. However, patrolling in different surrounding districts and local efforts will continue in search for the victims who the authorities assume are no more alive. Medium-sized Pinak-6, with more than 300 passengers on board, sank in the middle of Padma River near Mawa Ferry Ghat on August 4. More than 47 bodies have been recovered over the last one week after the double-decked launch capsized near Mawa Turning Point amid bad weather. About 160 people have been rescued alive while more than 100 remained untraced eight days after the tragedy, according to a news agency.
