Pintu among 28 chargesheeted

Former state minister Abdus Salam Pintu of BNP and 27 others were accused of the August 21, 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka city, in a chargesheet submitted by the police to the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court Wednesday, reports UNB.
Of the accused, 14 are in custody and nine of them have made confessional statement to the magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC admitting their involvement in the grenade attack.
Among those chargesheeted, Masood and Kazal have already died, Muttakin and Mursalin (two brothers) are in an Indian prison.
Others are former state minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu, his brother Maulana Tajuddin, Mufti Hannan, his younger brother Mofizur Rahman, Maulana Abu Taher, Sharif Shahidul Islam, Maulana Abu Sayeed, Mufti Jandal, Abul Kalam Bulbul, Jahangir Alam, Arif Hasan Sumon, Jewel, Hosain Ahmed Amin, Ujjal alias Ratan, Rafiqul Islam Gazi, Iqbal, Maulana Abu Bakar, Maulana Liton, Khalilur Rahman, Jahangir Hossain Badar, Taifur Rahman and Mustafa.
About 22 persons, including Awami Mahila League president Ivy Rahman, were killed and around 200 people were wounded in the deadly grenade attack in front of the Awami League central office.
At least five police officials had in phases investigated the case since the incident and their findings were found faulty. Twenty persons had been arrested and confessional statements extracted from them. None of them were charge-sheeted after the latest investigation carried out by Assistant Police Commissioner (CID) Fazlul Karim.
CID chief Javed Patwari told reporters that action would be taken against the police officers, who investigated the case earlier and had arrested 20 innocent persons in connection with the case.
