RAJSHAHI, Nov 26 (BSS): Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Professor M Tamim Wednesday expressed his optimism that the pipeline gas is likely to be supplied to Rajshahi by 2009.
He said that the process of gas supply is going on in full swing.
"Necessary distribution-pipes for the dwelling houses connection in the metropolis has already been purchased," Dr Tamim said while addressing a seminar as the chief guest titled "Western Region Development: Energy and Industrial Perspective".
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) in collaboration with German Technical Cooperation and Energy and Power, a fortnightly magazine, arranged the seminar at the auditorium of Rajshahi Medical College.
Professor Tamim said that formulation of the coal policy is at the final stage. The next elected government, he said, would take final decision in this regard.
He said the present caretaker government was very sincere to remove the disparity in different fields especially energy and power between Eastern and Western Bangladesh from the very beginning.
He said the present government achieved a significant progress in the alleviation of poverty in the monga-prone Rangpur area.
Referring to exploration of new gas fields, Dr Tamim said that foreign investment is a must side by side with using local technology and investment.
"On availability of gas in the offshore and in the number 7 well in Barisal the extracted gas could be supplied to the western region via Khulna through pipeline," he said.
In future, he said steps would be taken to convert all the power generation centres into coal-fired ones while the demands of industrial units, CNG stations and fertiliser factory would have to be fulfilled with the natural gas.
In this regard, he said half of the total extracted gas is being used in power generation centres at present. He said benefit of the coal-based power-generation centres would go to the people of Northern Bangladesh.
Professor Tamim said the government has been working relentlessly to establish a 600 to 1000 megawatt power generation station at Ruppur Atomic Power station at Ishwardi.
