Pirates abduct 50 fishermen

BARGUNA, July 5 (bdnews24.com): Pirates have robbed 16 fishing trawlers and abducted more than 50 fishermen in Bhedakhali of Dublar Char Union in the Bay of Bengal, alleged leaders of Barguna District Trawler Owners' Association.
The pirates attacked the trawlers when they were anchored at Bhedakhali Sunday midnight. The criminals looted Hilsa fish worth Tk 1.0 million and abducted more than 50 fishermen.
The pirates demanded Tk 3.0 million as ransom for the 50 men. The fishermen were from Patharghata Upazila of Barguna and different areas of Pirojpur but could not be ascertained immediately.
Barguna District Trawler Owners' Association president Golam Mostafa Chowdhury told reporters that the pirates belonging to a gang headed by Raju and Abbas, looted 16 trawlers including FB Labani, Shuvajatra and Jayanti.
Patharghata Coastguard Camp officer Selim Mia confirmed the news agency of the abduction and robbery.
Patharghata Fishermen's Association president Sagir Alam said that the relatives of the abducted fishermen came to the Patharghata port to collect information of their close ones.
