The Kali Temple of Pirojpur Municipal Crematorium has been set on fire and vandalised, with its donation box and some items used for cremation stolen, stirring resentment in the area, reports bdnews23.com.
Pirojpur Sadar Police chief Mohammad Shariful Islam suspects the incident took place between 3:00 am and 3:30am on Monday.
Municipal Crematorium Committee President Sunil Chakraborty said he went to the spot and found the idol of Shiva adjacent to the temple vandalised.
Some parts of the broken idol were burnt down, he said, adding that the gate of the crematorium was broken too.
The miscreants also took away several tools used for cremation, said Sunil.
"Initially, it is believed that someone entered the temple to steal money and goods. However, we are investigating whether there was any other reason behind this," said Shariful.
Police are trying to identify those involved.
