Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain told the House Thursday that the present government had undertaken a plan to build the Dhaka-Chittagong access controlled highway, reports BSS.
"The highway will be constructed on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis," he said while replying to a question raised by treasury bench member Nasimul Alam Chowdhury.
To this end, he said, pre-qualification tender was called twice according to the Private Investment Rules 2004, but it was not possible to select private investors. "The implementation work of the highway will start after selection of the private investors," he added.
Answering to another question from ruling party lawmaker Muhibur Rahman Manik, the communication minister said lands of the Roads and Highways Department were allocated to 161 persons on lease basis for setting up CNG filling stations by the past four- party alliance government.
The minister told Jatiya Party member Manirul Islam that rail line would go up to Barisal over the proposed Padma Bridge.
Meanwhile, Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain told the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that efforts were underway to stop the trend of charging excess fare by taxi and three-wheeler auto rickshaw drivers through stringent enforcement of laws.
"Efforts are underway to relieve the passengers through stringent enforcement of the law (to operate vehicles on fare meter). (BRTA) Bangladesh Road Transport Authority is regularly operating mobile courts with the help of law enforcement agencies in Dhaka and other divisional cities," he said replying to a question by Awami League lawmaker Ekabbor Hossain.
He said 62 cases were lodged against realising excess fares by taxi and auto rickshaw drivers by BRTA executive magistrates between January and March this year.
Moreover, he said, steps were being taken to penalise vehicle owners and scrap their route permits instantly if specific allegations of meter tampering is found.
