Plan to generate 6,000MW more electricity in 5 yrs

The caretaker government, encouraged by the development partners' funding commitment and private sector's investment potentials, is considering a plan to generate around 6,000 megawatt (MW) of additional electricity by next five years (2007-2012)
Sources said, a total of 26 new power plants will be installed during the period of which 17 will be set up by the public sector, eight by the private sector and one by both private and public initiatives.
The public sector plants will generate a total of 3,375 MW, while the private sector will produce 2,500 MW of additional electricity during the next five years under consideration.
Five large-scale plants having generation capacity of 450 MW each are also among the planned power plants to be installed by 2012 next.
Among the large power plants, four will be gas-fired and installed by the private sector at Sirajganj, Bibiyana and Meghnaghat under Meghnaghat-II and Meghnaghat III phases, while one by public sector at Bheramara.
Ten small independent power plants (IPPs) having the generation capacity between 10 and 30 MW each totalling 200 MW are also planned for installation by the next five years.
