Rising demand for plastic houseware in the domestic scene has recently come to drive the growth of the market for plastic products in Bangladesh, industry insiders said Tuesday as the annual International Plastic Fair kicked off in the city Monday.
Accordingly major players in the market have lately shifted their focus to this particular product segment and since then have seen significant rise in their sales output- exhibitors reported during the event.
"The monthly sales volume of my company has become threefold in the recent times thanks to our increased market concentration on plastic house ware", said Saiful Islam, Senior Sales Executive of Bengal polymer Wares.
"Previously, we used to concentrate more on plastic products intended for industrial use, but recently we have switched much of our focus to household plastic items realizing their market potential," he added.
Such remark was testified by the apparent high customer demand for household products during the plastic fair, which draws large crowd from the middle class buyers during the four-day affair.
Major house ware items, which reported significant sales, include plastic made buckets, dishes, jugs, tiffin boxes and all sorts of crockery as well as plastic made furniture especially chairs.
"Market for plastic house ware is poised to grow as the local industry is now bringing innovative attractive designs in their product ranges while maintaining a much cheaper price range," said Muhammad Al Amin, Sales and Marketing Manager of Partex Holdings.
"Other major potential market for plastic manufacturers are the plastic made coat-hangers which have huge demand in the local readymade garments as well as in the international market", he added.
According to industry estimates, the market size for plastic products locally amounts to around Tk six billion while the annual export from the sector accounts for US$ 120 million. The market is currently growing at an estimated 20 per cent rate.
"While the annual per capita consumption of plastic in Bangladesh is only 3kg, it is as high as 30 kg in the developed world"- said an industry insider.
