The Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh made a plea to the caretaker government for withdrawal of the proposed 4.5 per cent VAT from the tuition fees of private universities, said a press release.
The Vice-Chancellors of some 35 private universities at a meeting of the association Saturday also asked the government to review the case of the proposed budget to impose tax on the private universities of the country.
They said the imposition of 4.5 per cent VAT on tuition fees would hamper education and students have to pay larger amount which will discourage the students to pursue higher education offered by the private universities as a whole.
The association urged the government to reconsider the matter as 'no countries around the world including the SAARC countries impose such tax on universities'.
