Plea seeks probe into corruption allegations against Gen Aziz

We will review the charges: ACC chief

FE REPORT | Thursday, 30 May 2024

A petition has been filed with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), for an investigation into the alleged corruption revealed in the US sanctions against former Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Salah Uddin Reagan filed the complaint on Wednesday.
Addressing a news briefing, he says if the ACC does not take any action, he will file a writ petition with the High Court in public interest.
Meanwhile, ACC Chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah told reporters at a press briefing that the anti-graft body would review the corruption allegations against the former army chief.
"There is no scope to avoid the petition if the complaints are brought under the schedule of the anti-graft watchdog," he said.
General Aziz went on retirement from the Bangladesh Army on June 23 in 2021. After three years of his retirement, the US State Department on May 20 this year imposed sanctions on him, bringing corruption allegations.
"This action [imposing sanctions] renders Aziz and his immediate family members generally ineligible for entry into the United States," read a press statement from the US State Department.
It said the actions of Aziz contributed to the undermining of Bangladesh's democratic institutions and the public's faith in public institutions and processes.
"Aziz Ahmed engaged in significant corruption by interfering in public processes while helping his brother evade accountability for criminal activity in Bangladesh."
"Aziz also worked closely with his brother to ensure the improper awarding of military contracts and accepted bribes in exchange for government appointments for his personal benefit."
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller announced the public designations made under Section 7031(c) of the annual Department of State, Foreign Operations, and the Related Programs Appropriations Act.
