Thursday, 31 December 2009

Chittagong Office
CHITTAGONG, Dec 30: Economists and politicians at a round table discussion here today called for introducing single currency of the SAARC countries like Euro to bolster economic growth of the South Asian region.
They said European countries have made resounding economic advancement through the formation of the European Union and the single currency Euro keeping independence and sovereignty of their respective countries intact.
They were however strongly critical of the government of India's non-cooperative steps by imposing non-tariff barriers on export of Bangladeshi goods to the Indian market.
Industries minister Dilip Barua addressed the round table discussion on 'Commerce and Investment: Regional Cooperation' as chief guest organised by Forum for People's Voice at Hotel Agrabad this morning.
Mr Dilip Barua said the present government believes in good neighbourly relations with India and wants to improve bilateral relation with Myanmar with giving highest importance to the welfare of our people and interest of the country.
Bangladesh can make better progress through this policy but the 4-party alliance govt did not want it and so the country could not achieve its expected progress.
Former commerce minister Amir Khosru Mahmud said, exportable commodities from Bangladesh are not getting market access to India due to different non-tariff barriers imposed by Indian customs.
It runs counter to the regional trade cooperation under the spirit of SAARC.
Haider Akbar Khan Rono however said, blind opposition to India will not bring any positive result.
"There are issues with India which we can address through positive outlook. Economic matters should be looked upon from the economic point of view, not through politicizing them.
We are two friendly countries and people from both the countries want to live in peace and harmony. They can cooperate with us in our trade, infrastructure and investment, he added.
