Please save Lawachhara national forest
Tuesday, 15 July 2008
WE are glad to learn that Chevron has completed their seismic survey in Lawachhara national forest and its adjoining areas. But we feel the forest is still not safe from further destructive activities by other quarters.
Hundred years ago it was a vast forest in Hobiganj. Day by day its land decreased and deforested for the tea-plantations and by the wood-thieves. At present the forest is remained on 1250 hector of land only.
The Lawachhara forest is the home of 16 species of animals and unknown number of reptiles. This is also home of 246 species of birds. Some of them are migrant birds who come here on summer, build their nest and lay eggs. This forest have 167 species of plants including different kinds of orchids. Many valuable and rare plants are available here which are used for the herbal medicine.
From all aspects this forest is very important for our country. This is our precious national asset. If we can take good care of this forest, it will be turned into a popular tourist spot in the future.
So, our earnest request to our government and non-government sectors to come forward jointly and save the Lawachhara national forest from the further destruction. The people of Bangladesh will remember your contribution with gratitude.
