FARIDPUR, Nov 17: Plying of shallow machine driven vehicles, locally called 'nasiman', having no approval from the authorities concerned has become rampant recently on the roads and highways of Faridpur.
As a result, road accidents involving these faulty vehicles are increasing. Quite a number of people were killed and many others injured in the accidents during the last six months, sources said.
According to hospital sources, more than 10 such accidents take place every month and the number is on the rise. Hospital records show around five to eight persons sustaining fatal injuries caused by accidents relating to "nasiman" every month.
The vehicles have no licence and number plate on them. There is an allegation that the operators of the illegal vehicles manage a section of traffic police with illegal gratification.
The police, however, denied the allegation and said they frequently launch drive against plying of 'nasiman'.
Local officials of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in different points in Faridpur, Bhanga, Nagarkanda, Sadarpur, Boalmari and Madhukhali upazilas failed to punish the operators as those had no registration number.
Faridpur Police Super Kusum Dawyan said they were trying to stop plying of those unregistered vehicles the number of which had recently been increased alarmingly on the highways and basic town roads.
He added that they were unable to take any punitive measure against the operators as the vehicles bad no number plates on them.
Assistant director of the Faridpur BRTA told this correspondent that they would launch drives in future.
Local sources assumed that more than 200 nasimans now ply the roads and highways is Faridpur. However, no authentic figure was available.
