PM asks developers, real estate cos to curb greed, maintain building code

Wednesday, 24 March 2010

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked real estate businessmen and developers to shun their greedy "make money at any cost" attitude, in order to avoid a bleak outcome resulting from any natural calamity, like an earthquake, reports UNB.
She said that real estate companies and land developers had to be more careful and aware of the dangers in the way they go about their business.
"Developers have to change their attitude with regard to leaving open space. There has to be some open space between buildings where inhabitants can take shelter during natural calamities like earthquakes," she said.
She also underscored the necessity of being adequately prepared, including procuring essential equipment, in order to face any eventuality in the event of an earthquake in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister made the assertion when a 30-member delegation of the Bangladeshi Medical Team that provided treatment and health assistance to the earthquake victims of Haiti called on her at Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Tuesday.
The team comprised 10 doctors and nurses working under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and 20 doctors and nurses from the military.
Hasina said there were lessons for Bangladesh to learn from the devastation witnessed in Haiti, as well as its aftermath, as the risk of natural disasters loomed large here as well.
She gave special importance to strict maintenance of the building code in construction work.
Hasina said that real estate companies and developers should strictly follow the building code, and provide necessary open space when they develop land and construct buildings.
The delegation apprised the Prime Minister of their activities in Haiti through a power point presentation, and told her how they had to work under very adverse conditions there.
Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad later briefed reporters.
Sheikh Hasina appreciated the Bangladeshi medical team for successfully providing humanitarian support to the affected population in Haiti, saying that this has improved Bangladesh's image worldwide.
She mentioned that through the efforts of the Bangladesh Medical team, the people of Bangladesh had once again proved that they are always ready to stand beside anyone who suffered at the hands of natural calamities.
Reiterating Bangladesh's firm commitment to stand beside the distressed, Sheikh Hasina said the country was ready to send humanitarian support anywhere needed across the world.
The Bangladesh medical team, composed of physicians, nurses and army personnel, was sent to the Caribbean island state of Haiti on January 30, following a mammoth earthquake there that devastated its capital, Port-au-Prince, and its surrounding areas. The team was sent as per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
