Wednesday, 16 March 2011

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday advised the student community to acquire skill in modern science and technology instead of getting themselves involved in any violent activities, reports UNB. "We must be a well-disciplined and educated nation. Congenial atmosphere must be ensured on all campuses for the sake of students and above all the nation"s prosperous future," Hasina said. She was addressing a function marking formal inauguration of Bangladesh University of Textile (BUT) at its Tejgaon campus. First of its kind in the country, BUT has emerged as the 34th public university. Previously, it was the College of Textile and Engineering. Hasina unveiled the plaque of the university. The function was presided over by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid. Parliament passed the Bangladesh University of Textile Bill in last September. Referring to Bangladesh cricket team"s victories in the ICC world cup, the Prime Minister said the boys have proved that Bangali nation could do anything. "Our students are highly meritorious. They just need ideal academic environment and necessary facilities," she observed. She was also critical of the student community for ransacking private and public vehicles on the streets in recent incidents. "Going berserk on streets and vandalising vehicles can bring nothing good for anyone." The Prime Minister asked the textile engineers and technologists to launch substantial research works for improving quality of textile products to grab both domestic and international markets. "The present government like in the past would continue to allocate necessary money for research works," she added. Mentioning success in decoding genome of jute, the Prime Minister said the government has allocated money for research in agriculture. "Food security for every person has to be achieved," she added. The Prime Minister urged the people of all walks of life to encourage each other to cultivate every inch of the land. Another report adds from Bagerhat: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday pledged to set up a 1300 MW coal-based power plant and an airport in the district. The Prime Minister also said the government has taken up steps to introduce railway communication between Bagerhat and Mongla. Hasina made the pledges at a public rally arranged by Bagerhat Awami League at Khan Jahan Ali college ground in the afternoon. Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated Bagerhat Shrimp Research Centre at Buitpur and laid foundation stone of Bagerhat Bar Council Building. Addressing the officers of the Shrimp Research Centre, the Prime Minister asked them to give their best efforts to take country"s shrimp farming into a new stature.
