Wednesday, 16 June 2010

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon all Tuesday, specially the leaders and workers of Bangladesh Krishak League, to plant at least three saplings of different trees each to protect environment and bio-diversity, reports BSS.
"You have to plant saplings of trees during the ongoing tree plantation campaign of Krishak League and also encourage the countrymen to involve themselves in the movement in the greater national interest," she said.
The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating a three- month Tree Plantation Campaign-2010 of Krishak League that formally began from the Prime Minister's official residence Ganobhaban in the city Tuesday.
Chaired by Krishak Legaue President Mirza Abdul Jalil, the inaugural function was also addressed, among others, by Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzak, Secretary General of Bangladesh Krishibid Institution A F M Bahauddin Nasim and Krishak League General Secretary Motahar Hossain.
Sheikh Hasina asked the Krishak League leaders and workers to encourage the rural people to plant saplings of different types of trees to make a green Bangladesh amid various adverse impacts of global climate change.
She also asked them to inform her after the campaign how many saplings were planted in each area and announced that highest tree planting area will be rewarded with special prize. The Prime Minister also laid emphasis on ensuring proper nurturing of the planted saplings to protect them from any adverse situation.
Issuing stern warning against tree felling, she said none will be spared if found involved in tree cutting, whatever be their political identity.
Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh Krishak League is conducting the campaign every year since its inception in 1985 and her government during its previous term planted a huge number of saplings across the country.
She said to encourage the rural people engaged in social afforestation programme her government provided their share of money in the programme though they were deprived in the past.
Mentioning the limited arable land and huge demand for food, Sheikh Hasina said her government has a plan to build every village in a planned way so that dwelling houses, schools, colleges, mosques and other establishments remain on one side and agriculture land on the other to introduce scientific cultivation system.
