PM can't declare amnesty, only President can, says Moudud

Monday, 2 March 2009

Criticising government handling of the BDR mutiny, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed Sunday said none has the right to declare amnesty unless trial is finished, reports UNB.

"Only the President can declare amnesty after finishing trial of the accused involved in any incident," he said about the pardon announced by the PM to pacify the BDR rebels during the violence in their headquarters.

The fallen star of the BNP made the remarks while talking to journalists after a doa mahfil for the army officers killed in the onslaught.

The former ruling party arranged the doa mahfil for the slain army officers and civilians in the Wednesday-Thursday mutiny at BDR headquarters.

The function was held at the National Press Club in the city as part of its programme following state-announced three-day mourning.

Olama Dal secretary general Shah Mohammad Nesarul Haque conducted the prayer for salvation of the departed souls.

The BNP leader said an all-party probe committee should be formed to investigate the mutiny perfectly.

"A law should be enacted to try the persons involved in the tragic incidents at BDR headquarters," he said.
