Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock at the death of Shawkat Hossain Hiron, an Awami League lawmaker and former mayor of Barisal City Corporation. Hiron, also the President of Barisal City Awami League, died at Apollo Hospitals in Dhaka on Wednesday morning. An important political figure of Barisal, Hiron suffered brain haemorrhage on March 22 at Barisal Club. Since then, he had been on life support. In a message of condolence, the Prime Minister said Hiron had turned Barisal city, which was neglected for a long time, into a ‘Venice of the East’ through his untiring efforts. “His (Hiron’s) role in the development of Barisal was unparalleled and his love for the people of Barisal was genuine,” she said. Hasina said the people of Barisal would remember him with deep respect and love. She said: “In the death of Hiron, the people of Barisal lost a dedicated politician and an architect of development. Awami League lost a strong organizer and the country lost a true patriot.” The Prime Minister also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family as well as millions of workers, friends and well-wishers, according to UNB.
