Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday distributed cheques of financial assistance among the dependants of army officers killed brutally during the February 25-26 (2009) carnage inside the BDR (now BGB) headquarters at the city’s Peelkhana. She handed over the cheques to the family members of the victims at a simple ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). In cooperation with the Prime Minister’s Office, Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) has been providing the members of all the martyred army officers with the annual financial support of Tk 480,000 to each family. Responding to the request of the Prime Minister after the BDR carnage, a total of 26 private banks announced to donate Tk 40,000 per month to each family of the slain army officials. The BAB will continue the financial assistance of Tk 40,000 per month to each of the martyred families for 10 years, starting from 2009. While handing over the cheques, the Prime Minister talked to them and enquired about their wellbeing. At the end of the programme, a munajat (prayer) was offered seeking divine blessings for the deceased army officials, according to UNB.
