Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina Wednesday directed her official concerned to look into the position of a plot of land for setting up permanent office of Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) at Segunbagicha in the city and assured other supports for the reporters, reports UNB.
The PM made an instant announcement donating Tk 2.0 million (20 lakh) for development of the DRU during a meeting with its leaders.
Sheikh Hasina gave the directives when the executive-committee members of the reporters' unity led by DRU President Shamim Ahmad and General Secretary Pathik Saha called on her at the Prime Minister's Office.
In the meeting, the DRU placed a five-point demand before the Prime Minister. The demands include solution of the reporters' accommodation problem, introducing pension scheme for reporters by government and risk allowances for the reporters, and providing medical facilities at the public hospitals for reporters on priority basis.
The PM gave a patient hearing to the pleas of the reporters and assured them of providing all possible assistance from the government for their welfare.
About the reporters' accommodation problems, the PM said the reporters' accommodation problem can be solved through 'hire-purchase' process under which flats will be built and the reporters will get the ownership of the flats by paying rent for a particular period of time.
