Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has stressed on the need for proper and honest leadership in the cooperatives movement.
She was speaking at the inauguration of the 39th National Cooperatives Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city Saturday, reports bdnews24.com.
“Those who intend to profit out of cooperatives can leave. Only those who stand for collective welfare should remain,” Hasina said.
“Proper cooperatives leadership will have to be established,” she added emphasising on the need for a national cooperatives regulation and urging relevant quarters to work toward this end.
The PM went on to term the current condition of cooperatives as ‘mortally ill’ and said, “The movement will have to be revitalised. Proper utilisation of cooperatives will increase production and do away with poverty, so more emphasis is needed here.”
She also pointed out that her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted to decentralise government power to develop the rural areas.
“A number of steps were taken for the development of cooperatives after the liberation. But the expected successes could not be achieved. Everyone knows the causes,” Hasina added.
She went on to emphasise on the importance of the ‘One Household One Farm’ project undertaken during the previous tenure of the Awami League-led government.
“It is possible to eradicate poverty from rural areas through the project’s implementation. It is possible to develop living standards at the villages through proper utilisation of resources and bringing villages under cooperatives. Our land is fertile. We can export crops by boosting our agricultural output through cooperatives.”
Hasina also said that her government would do all within its power to increase the efficiency of cooperatives.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam blamed the previous BNP-led government for increasing partisanship in cooperatives.
He said, “The former government was fuelled by corruption and inefficiency. Milk Vita was turned into a haven of corruption.”
“Former BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan built a Milk Vita plant at his constituency. However, the plant did not come into operation for a single day as there are no cows in the area and thus, no milk.”
