PM for scrapping Supreme Judicial Council
Saturday, 26 July 2014
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday stressed the need for scrapping the Supreme Judicial Council and restoring the article 96 of the Constitution saying that this system does not go with the parliamentary democratic system. She made the comment while responding to a question at a press conference, organised at her official residence Ganabhaban to brief the media about the outcome of her recent London visit. The Prime Minister said the Supreme Judicial Council was enacted during Ziaur Rahman’s regime when there was no democracy in the country. During the Pakistan regime, Hasina said, General Yahya Khan had first introduced this system. ‘We want to go back to the 1972 constitution where Parliament had the power to impeach judges,’ she added, according to UNB.
