PM for skilled, disciplined and strong armed forces

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday expressed her firm conviction to maintain skilled, disciplined and strong armed forces in the country in future to safeguard national independence and sovereignty, reports BSS.
The Prime Minister expressed the view while addressing the 11th Graduation Ceremony of the National Defence Course (NDC) at Mirpur Hall of Mirpur Cantonment in the capital.
She said, the defence forces must be smart and well trained as sovereignty of geographical integrity is not the only issue of national defence at present time.
Sheikh Hasina said, keeping this in mind her government has been continuing its relentless struggle to consolidate the victory that the nation earned in 1971, while making the independence meaningful.
Referring to international terrorism and militancy that the world is facing now, Sheikh Hasina said, no nation should ignore threats on sovereignty of others, which will eventually shatter their own security.
The Prime Minister said, her government wants to maintain good relations with the neighbouring countries as the prime objective of the country's foreign policy is friendship to all, malice to none. She said, the greatest Bangali of all times
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took massive steps to establish sovereign and strong Armed Forces in the war-ravaged country despite resource constraint.
Bangabandhu for the first time built up Military Academy, Combined Arms Schools and Self-Centre and school for each arms service for their education and training while incorporated modern arms and equipment, war planes, tanks and cannons for them, she added.
Hasina said, security and defence systems of the present day world is facing ever-changing environment every day and a comprehensive approach has become essential to face multifarious nature of the threats.
She said, countries are forming regional groups and fora to ensure food, information and trade security, which is not possible for them alone.
The Prime Minister said, her previous government took the initiative to build up National Defence College in 1999 to impart special training for all the defence services.
Hasina said, the Armed Forces must obtain the capacity of forecasting all security threats and they have to always engage in collecting and analyzing data and information regarding defence. She expressed the hope that the patriotism of the Armed Forces will be based on training for the national defence, while their love for the people.
In her address Hasina listed a number of steps of her government against poverty, corruption, ensuring people's rights including their franchise as well as establishing transparency and accountability in all sectors.
Terming corruption as the main obstacle to economic growth Hasina said, her government's war against the social menace will continue in future. "We have been able to overcome the propaganda against the country centreing militancy and terrorism," she said.
About the verdict of the Bangabandhu murder case, she said, steps have been taken to execute the verdict of the trial. The nation does not expect the recurrences of such brutality in future, she added.
Referring to her joining the recently concluded UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, she said that she had raised Bangladesh's vulnerability in the conference and strongly demanded to mobilise a huge international fund for the worst affected countries across the world.
In this context, she said, the developed nations supported Bangladesh's plea and responded positively to this end.
Commandant of National Defence College Major General AKM Muzahid Uddin gave address of welcome. A total of 44 officers from host Bangladesh and 11 from friendly countries including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Sudan, Jordan, Qatar, Indonesia and Malaysia attended the National Defence Course.
Earlier, on her arrival at the venue, the Commandant of the National Defence College received the Prime Minister.
Among others, Chief of Army Staff General Md Abdul Mubeen, Chief of Naval Staff Vice-Admiral Z U Ahmed, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Major General Abdul Wadud, secretaries, Vice-Chancellors of concerned universities and high civil and military officials were present.
