PM for stronger cooperatives
Saturday, 1 November 2014
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought stronger cooperatives for improving quality of life and narrowing the rich-poor gap in Bangladesh.
"We have to strengthen rural economics to lessen this disparity," she said at the inaugural programme of the 43rd National Cooperatives Day in Dhaka Saturday.
She said cooperatives can help reinforce the rural economy and create jobs besides ensuring a market for agricultural produce.
The Prime Minister also called on everyone to maintain the success of cooperatives before distributing the 2012 National Cooperatives Award in 10 categories.
Hasina said every Upazila in Bangladesh would be brought under the 'Sharbik Gram Unnayan Karmashuchi' (Overall Village Development Programme).
Bangladesh has some 194,000 cooperatives with 10.2 million members or about 20 per cent of the country's adult population, according to a news agency.
