PM mourns Maqsudul demise

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock at the demise of scientist Dr Maqsudul Alam, the decoder of the sequence of the indigenous variety of jute who passed away at a hospital in Hawaii, USA, on Sunday. Maksudul, 60, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the Queen’s Hospital in Hawaii, a US state located in east Pacific, around 1:00am on Sunday. He decoded the genome of Tossa (high-yielding variety) jute a couple of years ago. Expressing deep shock at the death of the scholar and eminent researcher, Prime Minister Hasina said the world has lost a great scientist. She prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed her sincere sympathy to the bereaved family members. Born in 1954, Maksudul was a professor of the University of Hawaii, according to a news agency.
