PM orders stern actions against troublemakers
FE Report | Tuesday, 25 November 2014
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina directed the government officials Monday to take stern actions against those creating anarchy and violence at the educational institutions. She asked the officials to take prompt actions without waiting for permission from their higher authorities.
"I want you (government officials) to take appropriate action against anarchists at the educational institutions-without seeking directives from others (high ups)," she was quoted by the cabinet secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan as saying to the media after the weekly cabinet meeting.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting at the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat on the day.
The cabinet secretary said the PM has given the directives to the government officials while exchanging views with the deputy commissioners (DCs) and police commissioners of Rajshahi, Sylhet, Pabna and Moulvibazar through video conference.
The PM said that she will interact with the district level officials at least twice in a month through video conference from the next cabinet meeting, Mr. Bhuiyan added.
Prof AKM Shafiul Islam of Department of Sociology of Rajshahi University was chopped to death by miscreants on November 15 last and Suman Chandra Das (21), a student of Shahjalal Science and Technology University in Sylhet was killed on November 20 in an intra- party clash of Chhatra League- the ruling party's student wing.
The cabinet secretary said the PM asked the officials to take punitive actions against those involved in creating violence and anarchy at the educational institutions irrespective of party affiliation.
"I call upon those who are working at the field level- please work sincerely. We want to move the country forward so that the people could lead a happy and prosperous life," the PM said at the video conference with the officials of the districts.
The council of ministers approved two instruments for signing memorandum of understanding (MoUs) with Malaysia for cooperation in the fields of tourism, culture, art and heritage.
Sheikh Hasina will visit Malaysia in the first week of December. During her visit the two MoUs are expected to be signed with Malaysia, Cabinet Secretary said.
"The MoU on tourism would enhance cooperation in the field of research, training and human resource development and promotional activities for boosting tourism," Mr Bhuiyan said.
He said the MoUs will be implemented through a mutually agreed method. If any dispute arises in future it will be resolved by mutual discussion through diplomatic channels.
He said that as per the MoU on cooperation in the field of culture, art and heritage, both the governments will exchange research and publications and mutual visits of officials and experts in cultural sectors for promoting cultural cooperation.
Agencies add: Hasina said it is often seen that those who unleash violence or trouble in educational institutions are not students and are outsiders. "If those culprits are arrested immediately and punishment is given to them, then this problem will come under control. In doing so, there's no need to look at anyone's face….. I want to see proper steps taken against them."
