Sunday, 16 August 2015
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasin paid homage to martyred Brigadier General Jamil Uddin Ahmed, military secretary to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, marking the National Mourning Day, reports UNB.
Major General Mia Muhammad Joynul Abedin, military secretary to the Prime Minister, placed a wreath at the grave of Brig General Jamil at Banani Graveyard in the capital, on the PM's behalf.
Jamil Uddin Ahmed was also assassinated during the 1975 massacre along with Bangabandhu and most of his family members. The then President, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, called him for help when his house was attacked by a cabal of army men. Jamil rushed towards Road No 32, Dhanmondi which was Bangabandhu's residence.
Arriving in front of Sobhanbagh mosque, Jamil found that the PGR convoy had halted. He demanded to know the reason, and was told that there were army units ahead and that there was gunfire.
He tried to convince the troops to march forward. Then realising that time was running out, he got into his jeep and prepared to drive into Road 32 himself. But, he was shot dead as he sat in his jeep in the early hours of August 15.
