TOKYO, Dec 1 (UNB): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday called for increased Japanese assistance to help Bangladesh attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
"Our progress on Millennium Development Goals is largely due to Japan's support. To achieve the MDGs (by Bangladesh), Japan's increased assistance would of course be needed," she said.
Hasina was addressing a luncheon meeting arranged by Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary League at the conference room of Hotel Otani here.
Taro Aso, President of the Japan-Bangladesh Parliamentary League, also addressed the meeting, among others.
The Prime Minister in her address voiced Bangladesh's support for Japan to its claim for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.
Seeking increased Japanese business, she also called for an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Japan and requested that the rules of origin may be relaxed to allow Bangladesh to fully avail the GSP facilities in the Japanese market.
Hasina noted that Japan's cooperation has focused on development of infrastructures, human resources, rural areas, healthcare, power generation and specifically, among others, on poverty alleviation measures.
She expressed the strong hope that her visit and meeting with the leadership in Japan would take the excellent relations between the two countries to an even higher level.
The Prime Minister recalled Hayakawa's invaluable contributions which established the current position of Japan in Bangladesh.
"His (Hayakawa's) love and affection for Bangladesh will be remembered forever through his ashes interred in the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, and by the Japan Bangladesh Parliamentary League he so dedicatedly pioneered," she said.
Meanwhile, another report adds: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met Japan's Emperor Akihito and the Empress at the Imperial Palace here Wednesday.
During the audience, Emperor Akihito said: "We are happy for your visit to Japan." He praised the progresses being achieved in the industrial and agricultural fields under the leadership of present government of Bangladesh. The Emperor recalled that as Crown Prince in 1975 he and his wife visited Dhaka and met with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan AKM Majibur Rahman Bhuiyan was present.
