PM upholds judges' role in upholding rule of law

Sunday, 5 December 2010

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina Saturday said that judges must provide justice to the people with honesty, neutrality and professional attitude, reports UNB.
She said that justice for the people depends solely on the wisdom of the judges. A wrong decision of the judges can be the cause of great disaster for the justice seeker.
In this connection she urged the judges to show the highest level of neutrality keeping aside all kinds of fear, anger and emotion.
The PM made the appeal at the 58th annual general conference of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Association (BJSA) at Osmani Memorial auditorium.
She inaugurated the conference as the chief guest where Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed, State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advocate Quamrul Islam and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Secretary Anwarul Huq were present as special guests.
BJSA Chairman M Jahangir Hossain presided over the conference.
The PM told the judges to remain alert, so that the culprits get punished instead of the innocent people.
Citing the proverb 'justice delayed, justice denied', the PM also said that the judges should be more cordial.
In this connection, she said that most of the people of the country are poor, and many lack the courage to go to the court due to its time-consuming nature.
"Let there be justice for all, rich and poor," she said.
She said that the rule of law and democracy are complementary to each other. She said that rule of law cannot be established in the absence of democracy, just as democracy could not be strengthened in the absence of the rule of law. In this connection she said that the present government believes in democracy and the rule of law.
"After a long fight and sacrifice of blood we established democracy in the country and we are committed to establishing the rule of law in the country," she said.
Describing her government's various steps for the welfare of the judges and the judiciary, the PM said that the judges can now perform their duty neutrally and without any fear. "We have taken several steps to ensure a congenial atmosphere for the judges and the judiciary," she said.
Referring to various attempts of the autocratic military rulers violating the constitution and attempting to control the judiciary, Hasina said that she personally has experienced how the judiciary could be controlled.
She said that to bring peace, and to ensure transparency and accountability in the judiciary, her government has taken steps to digitise the judiciary.
She also informed the judges that the government has taken measures to increase various facilities for the judges including enhancement of their salaries.
